half the sky

every women should read this book! i honestly have to say i think it may be one of the most important books i've ever read.

my friend katie first told me about this book and i just finished it last week. it is so amazing and extremely eye opening! ....and i found it so well researched and well written.
i do have to warn you...  there's some really tough things to read in here, but it's so worth getting this information out there. i knew a little about some of these issues women face in the world today, but i had no idea to the extent of how bad some of these issues are. This book not only goes into the problems, but some of the best solutions for them too.

my heart goes out to the women who spoke about their lives in this book and it only made me want to do more to help make changes.

so if you have time, buy this book and read it. if you don't have time to read, go to this website to learn more about how you can help.

Loving Nikki McClure...

How much do you love these images? She's a local-ish artist from Olympia, WA and for the past few years, one Christmas gift I can usually count on is a Nikki McClure calendar (thanks, mom!). I love starting each month with one of her simple images and a single word. It's almost like setting an intention for the month. She also has originals, children's books, prints, notecards, etc.. Amazingly enough, she creates these images using an X-acto knife and a single sheet of paper.

If there's a baby in your life, I highly recommend this board book . . . It makes it about halfway through the alphabet, starting with Awake and ending with Nap. Too cute.

summer concerts

i love this photo by brooke nipar.... it reminds me of how much i love the energy and excitement of seeing a band i love play live up on stage. i want to be right there in this photo!
summer is here, so i'll have to check to see who's coming to town.
anyone have plans for any concerts coming up this summer?

Loving my girlfriends...

I've been thinking lately about how totally lucky I am to have such fabulous girlfriends. From my trip to San Diego where I got to see some of my favorite ladies to several awesome evenings recently where the wine and conversation was flowing.

I mean, boyfriends can be fun and husbands...amazing, especially when you have the right guy. But sometimes I think as long as I have really great girlfriends, the boys can just be the icing on the cake.

Tunes I love Tuesday: She & Him

I have a total girl crush on Zooey Deschanel. I just think she's adorable, especially in the movie 500 Days of Summer. If you haven't seen it, DO. A couple of years ago she did a collaboration with M. Ward and in March they just released their second album called Volume 2. I haven't heard it yet, but I love the first one. Listen.

mini cupcakes

about a year ago i was in new york with my coworker karen (who loves cupcakes as much, if not more, than me) and we came across the cutest "hole-in-the-wall" (literally) in the middle of soho, where this girl was selling itsy bitsy cupcakes! They were only $1 each, about the size of a quarter and she had all kinds of amazing flavors! Of course we each got one and were instantly in love with her adorable cupcakes... and this girl's genius idea! Mini cupcakes let you have a bite of something sweet, without making you feel guilty. since that NY trip, i've seen her cupcakes all over blogs and in some magazines... and even came across a bigger cupcake store of hers in another part of manhattan on a more recent trip! it sounds like her biz is taking off...

her little cupcake company is called baked by melissa... and she has now made her cupcakes available for nationwide delivery!

how amazing do they look? I wish i could have one right now... :)

coffee, friends, blogs, & color...

hello! happy tuesday... :)
hope everyone is doing well...
i had a fabulous time this past saturday meeting up with some local blog friends!
brandi, shelby, haydee, heather, and i all met up for coffee at the pannikin. A few of us had never met.... so it was so awesome to put a face to the blogs we've been reading! The 5 of us had the most amazing & interesting conversations. we ended up sitting there for 3 hours talking about everything! it was so awesome to meet such a smart & unique group of girls... so inspiring!
check out their blogs if you haven't already... each one is amazing!

speaking of blogs i love.... if you don't already follow color me katie, you must go take a look at her stuff!
she is the most positive and inspiring artist. you can't help but smile visiting her colorful blog.

here's a short video that explains her work as a street artist. the world needs more people like katie! ;)
